NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT
THAN YOUR BRAND!
Before I go any further, you gotta know some things about me as a fellow service-based entrepreneur. Let me share a story with you, that illustrates what I'm talking about here.
Back in the day, I was this tall, lanky, looked-different guy with a big Afro which made it easier for me to fail at being a 'company man' when I entered corporate America straight out of college. You know, one of the ‘suit & tie guys’ (i.e. brand managers) in the home office.
The crazy thing was ... and I’m a little embarrassed to admit it ... I really wanted to be one of those guys. I tried my best to fit in!
But I quickly discovered that the corporate culture and toxic workplaces were a breeding ground for big egos, cliques, power struggles, jealousy, lies, bad bosses, phonies, prejudice, unconscious bias, and backstabbing. It slowly took its toll. I literally got sick of it all. Especially the ass kissers and boot lickers!
After ten years, I had enough! I couldn't stomach the thought of continuing to work the longest hours while helping to build someone else’s branded corporate products. It was no longer on my itinerary. I just didn't want any more of their money.
I realized it was okay to let go of something that no longer served me.
I delighted in the idea of owning my own business. In my dreams I saw myself as a "thought leader," a credible, reliable expert, industry leader, or authority. I wanted to be accepted and respected so I presented myself as a brand strategist (which by technical training I am). That sounded very professional and seemed quite logical.
I thought it would resonate with people. Unfortunately, it didn't uniquely present or position me as being distinct and special (nor calling myself a branding coach which I also tried in later years).
Yikes!! I had to face the awful truth!
While I was great at branding other people,
I sucked at branding (and later on marketing) myself!!
I constantly found myself doing the hard sell ... pushy & salesy ... beg, pressure, or otherwise annoy potential clients ... trying to persuade anyone with a pulse to do business with me
The marketing methods, approaches, and tactics I used were useless, non-responsive, rejection laden, nauseating, wasteful, outdated, and somewhat prehistoric to say the least
I always felt invisible ... as if no one was noticing, listening, or paying attention to me ... like, it was chronic

PEOPLE ARE BRANDS, TOO
If you're still with me, to make a long story short, I eventually learned how to successfully ‘brand myself’ the old-fashioned way – by making every mistake in the book.
Despite having a pedigree branding background in corporate America (i.e. which included a successful stint at P&G – Procter & Gamble - who ‘wrote the book’ on branding) where I carved my strategic branding teeth in the field of Brand Management.
Not to mention two (2) degrees (BS and MBA) with honors (cum laude) from the renown USC (University of Southern California) Marshall School of Business, majoring in marketing with deep study in branding.
Furthermore, I was an adjunct professor of branding, marketing, and advertising for ten (10) straight years (evenings & weekends) at four (4) major Southern California universities. Nonetheless:
Unknowingly, I had not found a way to BE UNIQUE! I didn't make it easy for my market to discern what was different & special about me. I made it simple for prospects to pass me by or get me to work for sub-standard fees.
In my heart and soul I wanted be seen as THE GO-TO person and not just another branding option... aka THE authority prospects should pay attention to ... critical if you're trying to stand out in a crowded market
But all that began to change when I made the decision to not be labeled 'generic' and allow people to COMMODITIZE my expertise … looking and sounding like many other branding 'experts' … promoting the same kind of stuff and identical offerings
It wasn't until I gave myself permission to trust my journey that things shifted. To dream big and keep going and going when no doors were opening, believing in my gut that I had made a wise decision to TRULY BE an entrepreneur. That mindset led me to chart my own path and create success on my own terms.
Getting serious about branding myself meant being real, raw, and vulnerable ... not trying to be 'someone else' I thought everyone would like and respect. I had to let go of trying to act, dress, and talk like other 'branding leaders,' or have an “always-polished” image to be cool, impress, or please others.
The time had come to truly strategically (not visually) differentiate myself by nailing down my own personal value and power, what made me more interesting, engaging, and compelling ... and best of all what made me a maverick (we all have something that deviates from the norm). I had to come to terms with being more ME by celebrating my differences that made ME an original and more memorable!
This philosophy allowed me to find my spiritual calling which was to preach and teach the gospel of big branding! This became my life's work! It's hard to think that just from branding myself around my authentic self, The Branding Evangelist was born. That direction and purpose for my life let my true self show. It gave my life meaning and made my life more meaningful.
I then activated my calling by strategically crafting my brand to harness my upbeat personality, inspirational messages, and unique delivery of content-rich teachings ...
backed by an unrelenting, much appreciated, supportive attitude!
BE SEEN & HEARD ...
IN A CROWDED MARKET!
With an end goal to create an awesome personal brand to amplify my uniqueness and further differentiate me from others in my field who offered branding services, I concentrated on delivering an edgy 'customer experience' that made a positive, lasting impression on the market I served.
"How exactly did I finally give myself such a strong competitive edge?," you may be wondering.

RELIEF RIGHT NOW
Which brings me to the final point about my story (and thanks for sticking with me this far).
Looking back on 30+ years in the branding universe I orbit in, owning a Brand Development & Training Company full-time since 1985 (when I set up shop (LOL), I've learned a lot of lessons. In some ways, 1985 was a really pivotal year for me because it was when Jesus wore sandals, dinosaurs were roaming the earth, and the biggest news in the PC space was software-related, not hardware. The first version of Windows was released that year, on a disk operating system (called MS-DOS).
I say all this to say that I live & breathe branding!
Branding is my heartbeat. Like I said earlier, it's my spiritual calling –
the intersection of what I’m good at, love to do, and meant to do. It's my life's work!
The experience of one (1) career in my lifetime, having done nothing but branding my entire adult life (I never changed my career as many Americans go through careers like they do cars or refrigerators), has informed my abilities as a branding thought leader (coach, speaker, and trainer.)
Yet I think maybe the greatest thing I've ever done is impacting the thousands of owners I've touched. Giving them a path to follow as a human being to blow up their presence and enhance the lives of people they serve.
By channeling my unbridled joy of branding and an uncompromising commitment to eliminate unnecessary obstacles and false starts that crosses age, sex, martial status, race, color, creed, religion or national origin, and political preference or affiliation, I have torn down barriers. My world includes all of us! With that in mind, here's another nugget of truth for you to chew on:
Go beyond plain vanilla branding (avoid being bland, especially if you want to land ‘Grade-A’ high-value clients who always prefer ‘head and shoulders above’ over ‘run-of-the-mill’)
Develop your brand flavor (add a few sprinkles to stand out, not blend in, in a clear and precise way which is also critical if you want to fatten your bank account)
Be in a class by yourself (all the key branding wheels must be in motion if you want your audience to know, find, and pay for your expertise in a manner that my marketing strategist colleague and friend Nicki Chang-Powless says, “must be cost-effective, repeatable, and scale-able for you”)
